Surah Al Baqarah:60-62

Do I just live to eat or is it taking me away from the real mission of life?

I believe eating has become so prevalent in our lives that it actually seems like an occupation! We are either cooking, or learning how to cook, or actually eating or thinking about eating!

I do think that eating does take us away from our real mission in life. Food has become so central to our lives that it has become our primary focus. For example, I am a housewife living in a joint family, so about 6 hours (out of 12 waking hours) our spent in the kitchen! That is about 50 percent of my time. The rest is distributed in taking care of kids, teaching them, going out, swimming, and yes a little time spent on ibaadat (praying and reading the quran) without much quality. Food, on the other hand, has to be of the best quality! It has to taste great and of course should be something different. Also, you worry about whether the kids will eat it or not, so have to make something for them!

I often wonder if the Bani Israel had not been so picky, and had agreed to have mann and salwa, it could have been a great benefit to us! You often discover the advantages of something once you don’t have it. Now, I think we all agree (and I am sure the people of Bani Israel would too) that food would have tasted great, would be pure, it was heavenly so we would have never tired of it, it was from Allah and it would have been healthy. These days healthy food has also become another focus of ours! Everyone is reading up on and following different fad diets. It has become the main topic of conversations…So Yes!!!! I do agree that FOOD has indeed become the main focus of our lives!
