But Why?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We humans are an inquisitive creation. We like to ask “Why?” before doing anything. To find answers is an innate desire within us. To find a reason or a motivating factor to do things is also another trait. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى ) has preferred us over other creations and  we have been given a mind to reason with.

The Miracle of the Qur’an

Adults, especially, have a tendency to tell children to do things without explaining the “why” of it! As I learn the Qur’an, I am discovering specific answers to all my “whys, hows and whats.” Believe me, all answers to all questions a human mind can possibly ask can be found in this book! We just need to believe in it and open our hearts to it.

“How?” you may ask. The answer is simple; because it is no ordinary book. It is Kalam-Allah (word of Allah)!

Throughout my life I have heard people say, “Send blessings and say the durud on Rasul Allah (صلي الله عليه و سلم).” No one really explained why we should be doing this. The ‘why’ once again has been answered through the Qur’an, Subhan’Allah.

This ayah of the Qur’an for example gives a clear reason and a daleel (solid proof) for us to send blessings upon Rasul Allah

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
[Al-Quran – Surah Al-Ahzab (The Combined Forces):56]

There we have it! This is a perfect answer to when we ask ourselves, why should we send blessings upon Rasul Allah (صلي الله عليه و سلم)? The answer is Allah (سبحانه وتعالى ) and the angels all confer blessings on Rasul Allah(صلي الله عليه و سلم). And then, we are also commanded to do so if we call ourselves Believers. It is not given as a choice but rather a hukum (command). Should we be asking more questions after this? No, we should not!

The Motivation

The way deen is so simply laid out for us, it makes it very easy for us to understand, believe and also implement. This hukum (command) of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى  ) is backed by ahadith that provide the motivation to follow. We as humans need the motivating factor also, as if the hukum of Allah isn’t enough for us!

But who knows us best than our Creator. So we get the hadith also complementing this command.

‘UbaydAllah ibn Abi Talhah narrated from his father (رضي الله عنهم) that the Messenger of Allah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) came one day, and his face was radiating with happiness.

The Companions asked him, “O Messenger of Allah! We see that your face is full of happiness!” So he responded to them, “Indeed an Angel came to me, and said, ‘O Muhammad! Will it please you that your Lord has said, ‘No one from your Ummah sends blessings upon you except that I will send blessings upon him ten times, and no one from your Ummah will send salutations upon you except that I will send salutations upon him ten times.'” So I said, “Yes, Indeed my Lord (that will please me)!”
(Narrated by Ahmad, Authentic according to Albani)

The question to ask oneself is. After so many proofs, should we still have a choice to not do this? If so, then clearly we would surely be the ones losing out!

About Quran Reflections

Al-Huda's branch at Khayaban-e-Sehar is one of the few Quran courses being regularly conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, where the mode of instruction and examination is English. The students and teachers have decided to upload their reflections on the Quran and class notes on this blog, in order to be available to a global audience for the latter's benefit and inspiration.
