A Student of the Qur’an
The miracle of the Qur’an is that it is the only book that actually answers all of our questions and resolves our issues. One has to only delve into the depths of this Divine kalam (speech) with complete and strong faith.
One of the subjects of the Qur’an is Mankind. As we sit in class, in the same lesson with the same teacher, the contents of this divine kalam touch each one of us students individually as well as collectively.
As we keep studying the Qur’an, we begin to internalize its ayahs (verses). Our past flashes before us, we think about the present and start planning for the future. Life starts to take a shape and things become clearer than ever. This ayah from Surah Saba made a part of my life flash before my eyes:
وَمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُكُم بِالَّتِي تُقَرِّبُكُمْ عِندَنَا زُلْفَى إِلَّا مَنْ آمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَأُوْلَئِكَ لَهُمْ جَزَاء الضِّعْفِ بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَهُمْ فِي الْغُرُفَاتِ آمِنُونَ
“It is neither your wealth nor your children which bring you closer to Us even one jot. But those who believe and do good deeds; for them, there will be a double reward for their deeds and in high mansions shall they live in peace.”
[Al-Quran –Surah Saba (Sheba): 37]
I am a teenager sitting in my bedroom amidst packed suitcases and cartons and wailing uncontrollably. We are shifting from our very spacious apartment where all my siblings had their own bedrooms (hence our individual territories) to a place where I would have to share a room with my sisters. I loved my room and its many wardrobes and all the bumper stickers and posters I had put up on the walls. In my mind, life was unfair. I surround myself with complaints, sadness and negativity.
I have been a professional from some time and am now moving to a new country with a new job. My biggest excitement is that I have been promised an apartment of my own. I cannot wait to reach and start looking for the ‘dream’ house. I am already carrying many things in my luggage to decorate my new ‘dream’ home. Unfortunately, things don’t work out as planned and my ideal apartment seems beyond reach in the assigned rent limit. Weeks turn into months and before I can unpack my new bed covers, I have to move back home for some professional reasons. It seems like I never do get the proper house that I yearn for?
How can I have a perfect life if I don’t have a separate bedroom to make a nursery for my twins? We have seen many a houses to shift to, but somehow or the other at the end we are unable to make a final decision. None of my friends face this issue. It seems like my prayers are not to be answered for some time. I surround myself with more complains and more pessimism.
Present Day with the Qur’an in my Life:
All praises be to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) who is most Merciful and All Mighty. He has given me the taufeeq (capacity) to see things clearly with a correct perspective through the study of the Qur’an. The real striving and yearning in my life should be for the ghurufaat (lofty chambers) of Jannah (Paradise). That is the REAL and eternal home. Whereas I have made my house an issue throughout my life and a reason to complain all my life, in reality there is much more that I should be thankful to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) for.
We are in this world for an appointed time and any moment our lives here will be over. The real life is that of the akhira (the Hereafter) and that will always remain. If we are so worried about the size, location and condition of our homes in this transitory life, what should be our level of worry and preparation for the Hereafter.
Through His Divine wisdom, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has ways to change our lives for the better. My family is now looking to change our house. Masha’Allah , I have such inner contentment that I am not so concerned anymore about what kind of space I have here in this temporary world. If Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) wills, I will have a better house in this world also. The more important things are my family, their health and happiness and our strength of eeman (faith). The rest will follow, Insha’Allah!
