Is it too late?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Uzma Jawed

Difficult to spot the hidden thorns in the beautiful flower?

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّى

وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَى

“So have you considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza?
And Manat, the third – the other one?”
[Al-Quran – Surat An-Najm (The Star): 19-20]

What are my Ilahs (gods)?

I may think Lat and Uzza
Are not for me
They are for the people of old –
The ignorant

But then…
What are desires and appearances?
To me,
Are they not my present-day
Lats and Uzzas?

Do they not lead me astray?
Am I not the ignorant?

Phone-calls need to be answered
The call to prayer can wait…

Advice from the doctor, therapist, or even Google
The Qur’an and Sunnah can wait…

Pleasing people is important
Pleasing Allah can wait…

Acceptance in Dunya (Worldly Life) is vital for success,
Acceptance in Akhirah (Hereafter) can wait…

As I wait and wait,
The clock ticks and tocks,

And all I can do is hope and pray
That it’s not too late.
