United we Stand, Divided We Fall

Safia Kemal

“They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason.”
[Al-Qur’an – Surat Al-Ĥashr (The Exile): 14]

“The Muslim Ummah is divided. We cannot do anything collectively; we are so weak. The other countries have taken over us and we stand here hand in hand.”

These are all very common and depressing dialogues that we share with our friends in gatherings. We sound dejected, hopeless, despaired and sadly but truly, disconnected to the teachings of Qur’an.

Do we not see that our goal as Muslim Ummah is beyond the petty issues we as Muslims love to dwell on? They are the cause of all our problems. The fact is that we need to stop and self-assess. We are not the victims and they are not stronger. The above ayah is a proof of this.

We, as a Muslim nation, easily become negatively charged and reactive usually towards other fellow Believers. We forget that we can actually become more fortified by:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided…”
[Al-Qur’an – Surat ‘Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran): 103]

Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says: “You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason.” We feel the masses are collectively against the Muslims and out to get us. It is a Conspiracy Theory. Maybe it is.

The reality is that they are actually dispersed themselves. The reason for this disintegration is also given in the above ayah. These people who seem so collected yet are so divided are those who do witness the day, night, birth, flowers and many such signs around them that point to the Oneness of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), yet they do not believe that this life will ever end. These people can include anyone who does not come to the conclusion that Allah is Greater than all around us. Allah is Akbar (Greater).

We channel our energies in the negative way and instead of collectively coming together to come up with strategies to spread the word of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) as we are taught to do, we want to dwell in the nitty gritty of how our fellow Muslim brother or sister is wrong in not doing rafayaden, believing whether the masa of the neck should be done or not done or whether my sister’s hijab is worn properly or not!

Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) did not intend the name Hanafi, Shafai’i, Hanabali etc. for us. Had He wanted, He could have done so through the Qur’an. Yet, He says:

“And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you “Muslims” before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah . He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.”
[Al-Qur’an – Surat Al-Ĥaj (The Pilgrimage): 78]

We do not realize that the source of the strength of Muslims is our trust in Allah (سبحانه و تعالى). We are so worried about what the other party is doing that we fail to maximize our strengths and in the process deplete our energies in trying to study others or other nations.

Do we not see that our goal as Muslim Ummah is beyond the petty issues we as Muslims love to dwell on? We all need to become leaders in accepting our role to invite others to the way of life as it should be and not expect the others to do this job for themselves or for us. Let’s set out to use our skills that will benefit the Muslims as a whole.

Let’s worry on how together we can tackle the disintegration we witness daily in our society and in our youth but do nothing more than gossip about it. Why go far? Let’s begin with our country…

Our Society and Ummah is disintegrating bit by bit in front of our eyes. For those who call it liberalization, the note to them is that all of the below is taking us far away from our religion and teachings.

  • Have we not recently noticed the Lawn clothing advertising displayed on the streets of Karachi, propagating Muslim women as sex objects.
  • Have we not seen that at one point, women were not to come on screen without their heads covered? How do you think that has changed now?
  • Interaction between men and women is highlighted as a very halal thing to do through displays of banner advertising throughout.
  • Content of Pakistani dramas has changed so much that when surfing through the channels, one cannot differentiate whether the channel being watched is a Pakistani Drama or an Indian Drama.
  • Our youth is on Facebook on one page with God knows who and unmonitored as to what kind of influence they are under. Young children these days are allowed to have email and Facebook accounts.
  • We celebrate Valentines and Christmas, yet do not understand the importance of Jum’uah – A day of Festival for all Muslims.

We are so dispersed, ourselves, from the worship of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى). Then we want to host talk shows that talk about the disunity, lack of respect and the other nations excelling and penetrating our culture, while we stand and watch.

When we stand together in fighting the cause of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) and speaking out against all atrocities we witness as a nation, we will see people committing those atrocities, backing off. When we feel ashamed of our own hijab and our own deen to project it forward, we become vulnerable to attack.

We should not fear as Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) has promised He will cause fear in the Disbelievers’ hearts as a result making the Muslim Ummah stronger.

“We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allah of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.”
[Al-Qur’an – Surat ‘Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran): 151]

Our strength is in the Jamat. Our motivation should come from our worship.

Our energy is the word of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى). That is why the magicians in the court of Fir’aun fell in sajdah (prostration) in acceptance of the Oneness of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى). We have to believe in ourselves as a nation and believe Allah (سبحانه و تعالى)’s help is with us so long as we are together. That is the key and the first step.

About Quran Reflections

Al-Huda's branch at Khayaban-e-Sehar is one of the few Quran courses being regularly conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, where the mode of instruction and examination is English. The students and teachers have decided to upload their reflections on the Quran and class notes on this blog, in order to be available to a global audience for the latter's benefit and inspiration.

Jkk Safia for this very thoughtful article!
The fact that all of us love cribbing and not doing anything for reformation is so true. All of us muslims must change our ways of thinking and really get to work.

  3. Aziza says:

Wow JazakAllah Khair for this very insightful post. We truly have alot of work to do as an ummah, no doubt about it. May Allah save us from what we have let ourselves become.

  4. Kulsoom says:

This was an excellent reflection since it was telling us about the ways in which people are being mislead into doing wrong things and committing sins. It is true that every young girl or boy has a e-mail account or a facebook account which is not supervised by their parents or any other adult. We should be careful in whatever step we take especially children since they can sometimes be mislead into doing wrong things.

Unity is working just like cells of body,If it spreads our life is in danger, and if it works together it will make and keep us healthy.
